The Tignes ski resort is made up of five villages, Tignes Les Brevieres, Tignes Les Boisses, Le Lavachet, Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret.
Tignes Les Brevieres is the lowest village situated at 1500 metres altitude, and is also the only original part of Tignes. The original Tignes central village was located at 1550 metres altitude, however the village was submerged in 1952 after the dam was created. All the other villages of Tignes were built as part of the dam development in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Tignes Les Brevieres and Tignes Les Boisses are situated close to the dam, and the old central village site of Tignes’ central village. However the villages of Le Lavachet, Tignes le Lac and Val Claret were built further up the valley, all at around the altitude of 2100 metres.
The Grande Motte glacier is located beside the village of Val Claret, and due to there being a glacier, Tignes can offer summertime skiing to tourists.
Tignes ski resort was used in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games for the freestyle skiing and was also the co-host for the 1992 Winter Paralympics. Recent international competitions held in Tignes include the Winter X Games.
Extra activites available in Tignes include bike trails, Hiking, Golf, Water sports centre, Skate Park, Archery, Tennis, Rock Climbing, Helicopter tours, Rafting, Cinema, Bars, Clubs, Restaurants, Bowling, Spa Therapy, Beauty Centre, Fishing, Ice Driving, Ice Skating, Snow mobiles, Snowshoeing, Paragliding, Dog sledding and Ice Karting.
